"Hummingbird Friend" penstemon parryi is an excellent source of nectar. One of the desert's taller wildflowers, penstemon is a perennial which sends up many stalks, often 4' in height. Covered with delicate, rose-magenta, bell shaped flowers, these stalks sway gently in the desert breeze. The small first year base will bush out in subsequent seasons as the plant matures. Penstemon transplants well and will germinate beset in a tray of mixture of two parts potting soil and one part sand.

Plant 1/4" deep and keep moist for 2-3 weeks until seedlings appear. Transplant when about 1" tall. May also be sown directly in the ground.

Planting instructions: Needs warm days and cool nights to germinate. Fall and springs are best. Ideal planing conditions occur when the average daytime temperature is 75-80F and the average nighttime temperature is 50-55F. If seeds do not germinate at the time of planting, they may come up in the future when conditions are ideal. As temperature is a critical factor in germination, in colder climates plant early in the fall and late in the spring. In warmer climates, plant late in the fall and early in the spring.
