Recap: Foraging Supper Club with asi asi

asi asi Projects is a small creative hospitality group that owns and operates an experimental monthly supper club. For their February event, they teamed up with RAW on Romaine to develop a multi-course menu based on foraged items from the region, the Cactus Store who gave attendees an off-limits greenhouse tour and plant talk, and outfitted the tables with eclectic table linens from All Roads. Scroll for photos from Oscar Mendoza and catch up with asi asi’s founder, Sana, to step into her supper club world.

How did you come to start asi asi?

I’m realizing that this answer is ever-evolving. It’s unfolding in ways I wouldn’t have imagined – I just didn’t have the visibility at the time to know it would become the community it’s become. During my time in Brooklyn, I’d host dinner parties at a communal table in my Brownstone apartment. It was something that nurtured me because it brought all of these elements together and even in the same format – you never knew exactly what you were going to get. The energetic makeup is different with different guests. I wanted to do something along these lines but with a little more purpose.

How long have you been doing this project?

We began experimenting with conceptual supper clubs in October of 2022. We’re now membership-based, which has allowed us to keep this project going. Our members are so awesome about spreading the word.

I love how each supper is a collaboration with different creative people—chefs, tabletop designers, potters, gardeners, etc. You’re really skilled at weaving various talented folks together to create what looks like an incredible shared experience. Where do you find inspiration when curating your events?

Thank you. I’d say that inspiration finds me in lots of different ways but it always begins with curiosity. Sometimes it’s just a feeling I have around a practice I want to examine more closely or learn about – like foraging. And then the foraging dinner in a greenhouse leads me to discover a molting tarantula, which motivates me to think about ever-changing bodies or vessels. That could be a whole supper club in itself! But in terms of the creative collaborators, they’re often incredibly talented, humble people that I’ve met organically. When I admire someone and their work, I want to share it with others, and it’s nice to do that in the form of a celebration!

You have a connection to the desert, right? I first heard of Asi Asi through Brian Deran when you did a dinner with him/his ceramic bowls in the hi-des.

Yes! So that supper club with Brian of Western Desert Studio and Chef Dave Potes at Compound YV was so special for me because I have a place in Yucca and have lived in various places around the Mojave. Magic, the hi-desert has always been magic, from its artists to its natural resources.

How often do you host events/dinners?

We host one community/member dinner a month and usually one private supper club a month. The private supper clubs are typically organic referrals or clients (I’m a brand consultant) that commission us to design a supper club for them.

I’m a big believer in visualizing your future and sharing your goals with the world. It really does lead to actualizing your dreams!  Do you want to share a dream event/curation/collaboration/location?

I love that you are inviting me to dream with you. Outer space for sure. We’re not quite there yet in terms of guests spending time in space for leisure purposes but it’s not terribly far away either. I’ve been doing a lot of research on microgravity environments and logistical needs like water management and plant/food growing. So let’s say a space supper club. Maybe you and I can collab on table linens with fasteners so they stay put.

Do you want to share any upcoming events or projects?

We’re returning to the Wolford Residence in April and have some really cool cultural supper clubs coming up there. It’s a residence and rotating art gallery run by Lena Daly. More to come on these.

Where is the best way we can keep up to date with what you are doing?

The link in our IG is the best way to stay updated.  We keep it updated with new supper clubs and save the dates.
