We’re kicking off our new series highlighting small, independent boutiques, markets, and retailers across the country, and we couldn’t think of a better first feature than Totto’s Market in Chicago. Located in the Printer’s Row neighborhood, Totto’s is more than just a market—it’s a community cornerstone built on connection, creativity, and a deep love for good food. The shop is named after owner Scott’s father, Totto, who spent over 30 years as a butcher, and the spirit of those early grocery store memories inspires everything they do today.
“I can remember the excitement of going to the local grocery store where my dad worked,” Scott told us. “Watching him navigate relationships with his team and customers was beautiful. That period of my life stayed with me and inspired Totto’s Market.” After over two decades of living in Printer’s Row and realizing the area was underserved for food, Scott took a leap, leaving the media industry behind to lean into food and hospitality. In July 2019, Totto’s opened its doors, and Scott hasn’t looked back since.
For Scott, the best part of running Totto’s is simple: “THE PEOPLE!!,” says Scott. “It is incredibly addicting to see customer’s faces light up when they first walk into the shop. To see them smile and be excited about what we’re offering is so damn satisfying.” It’s even more satisfying that he can share this experience with his team. “We’re a small, special crew, and Totto’s wouldn’t be what it is without them. I’m so grateful.”
Of course, running a small business isn’t without challenges. “Between the monumental cost of health insurance, taxes, and paying our team a livable wage, it can be daunting.” But the neighborhood shows up every day, reinforcing why small businesses like Totto’s matter so much. “We truly are a neighborhood market,” he says.
Looking ahead, Scott isn’t chasing expansion—and that’s intentional. “I subscribe to the ‘do less, better’ approach. One shop can have a lasting impact on a community, and I’m so proud of what we’re doing here.” Instead, Totto’s focuses on building meaningful partnerships (like carrying All Roads’ kitchen towels and suede potholders!) and celebrating the local.
So, next time you’re in Chicago, swing by Totto’s. Grab a plate, say hi to the team, and soak in the magic of a place that’s doing it right—one thoughtful product and pie at a time.
Totto’s is spectacular and special! We couldn’t survive without it; a few steps from our building, we find everything we need to put a meal together and more.
But, best of all, Scott, Matt, Sergio and all of their team members make us feel welcome everyday. We are more grateful than we have words to have Totto’s in our life.
