Welcome to the first of our City Guides—a new series where we share our favorite independent, local businesses in cities we love. We’re big believers in shopping small wherever you are. Whether you’re just passing through or planting roots, the best way to get to know a place is by supporting the folks who’ve put their heart into it.
So, we thought we’d start close to home. The Hi-Desert is where we live, work, and wander. If you’re visiting for the first time or coming back after a while, we've mapped out a full day of what we’d actually do.
Way out in East Joshua Tree, Más (as the locals call it) is part café, part bar, part hangout spot. Coffee in the morning, cocktails in the afternoon, and a rotating calendar of food pop-ups and live music. A true desert oasis. Check their IG for what’s happening.
We do the Hi-View Loop Trail at Black Rock Canyon in Yucca Valley regularly. It’s about a mile long, with enough elevation to get your heart rate up and some killer views of the Morongo Basin. You’ll pass Juniper trees, Jojoba bushes, Joshua Trees, Yuccas—basically a masterclass in desert flora.
When we have friends in town, we always take them here. The old gas station is decked out like a head shop from the 1970s. Our friends Steve and Glen have an eye for the quirky and obscene.
Grnd Sqrl in Twentynine Palms has our favorite burger, hands down. The owners just opened 29 Beer Co. a couple of blocks away, so grab a drink while you’re at it.
Right across the street is a mini-mall of indie gems. Hit Hi Desert Times for a local mag, Scorpio Lollipop (run by artists Sara M. Lyons and Josh Grelock) for the best mix of gifts and wine, and White Label Vinyl for records. Don’t miss Very Very tucked in the back—a very very cool design shop that stocks work by the owners and other local artists. Check Corner 62’s IG to see if they’ve got live music or an art show going in the courtyard.
Drive down the road to Sun of the Desert in the Historic Adobe Plaza for men’s vintage basics. Then stop next door at Mojave Moon Apothecary for herbal self-care and desert-inspired gifts.
If you’re in Yucca Valley, we’d love to see you. Stop by our shop to pick up a memento or grab some road snacks for the drive home.
Head up to Pioneertown for cocktails and maybe a pre-dinner snack at Red Dog Saloon (we love it when there’s a band playing). Then, head back down the road to the Yucca Valley airstrip for a proper sit-down dinner at The Copper Room, where you can check out the copper-clad door we made for them.
